Driving Licence - Car Insurance Obtaining car insurance can be one of the difficulties you face during your first year in Florida,but you need it to be in place before you can drive or buy a car. It's worth making contact with an insurance company prior to your move to get advice on securing insurance because, for example, if you convey incorrect details about the points on your British driving licence, you're likely to be looking at an increase in the insurance premium. Obtaining a US licence is not easy. The following documents will only be accepted with a supporting document, including but not limited to a passport, Identification Card, Driving Licence from any other state, Employment Authorisation Card, Employer Identification, Identification from home country, Identification from school or college, and Social Security Card or other INS document. Without a licence you can't obtain insurance cover in Florida; without this its very difficult to purchase your American car. For non US citizens, the law in Florida requires identification, proof of date of birth and a social security number ( if issued) prior to the issue of a driving licence. Immigrants must submit their Green Card or Identification Card, and non-immigrants must provide an employment authorisation card or proof of non-immigrant classification. For the vast majority of those visiting Florida on the Visa waiver programme, it's usual to bring your UK license and use a rental car whilst in the US, obtaining insurance coverage in the UK as part of the rental package. For UK citizens seeking a Florida State licence, it is also necessary to take a theory test (usually at a local driving centre) and a short driving test which is less onerous than the UK driving test - although I know of somone not a million miles from me now who failed - they did pass at the second attempt - helped by driving on the right hand side of the road on the second test!
